Bali Updates

Om Swastiastu ...

When it comes to rabies in Bali, it may now be raining cats and dogs: The latest death of a young girl from North Bali suggests that both cats and dogs are now a vector for rabies on the island.

Other top new this week saw an Iranian man busted for drug smuggling at Bali's airport; a confirmation that Barack Obama will fly into Bali in June; there's official agreement to accelerate plans for a flyover at Bali's busy simpang siur intersection; and an announcement that the WBA champion Chris John's fight will be moved from Bali to Jakarta in late July.

We've got aviation news. Bali travel operators are worried that the cessation of Japan Airline service to Bali might cost Bali 12,000 arrivals each month. Domestic air tariffs in Indonesia may increase by as much as 20% at the end of this month. We've also got a round-up of new air services planned for Bali over the coming months. And, a legislator says the government should urgently accelerate plans to expand Bali's over-stretched airport.

Bali's governor is busy planning the island's future. He's called for compulsory education in Bali to be expanded from 9 to 12 years, and has invited those operating illegal motorcycles and cars in Bali to leave the island with their vehicles.

Checking our calendar of events – Bali will host a music camp in Ubud for some of the world's top songwriters during the first part of June. Also in Ubud, the Amandari is showing classic Balinese films from the 1930s July 1-3, 2010.

There's good news from children living in North Bali who are working to keep beaches clean and build artificial reefs.

Editions Didier Millet has republished "Ring of Fire" – the third edition of that classic Indonesian travel journal.

And finally, be sure to read some straight forward words on Bali from Australian travel journalist Ian Jarrett.

All this, and more, in this weeks Bali Update.
